Scenes from the road less impacted Pt. 10

Posted by NRG SVR in 100 MPG Challenge

Here’s the final round of pictures from my June trip to Saskatchewan.

The Blue Willow Motel in Wadena is very economical - you get free long distance, breakfast and wireless internet for about $45 per night.

‘Walter from Wadena’ - an Icelander it turns out - lives about 5 miles south on a farm. Here’s his pride and joy. When he bought this 20 years ago, he was ahead of his time…

The service station at the corner of Hwy 6 and 16 in Dafoe carries a blended
Milligan Bio-Tech product.

I stopped by Bruno, SK, and located Percy Schmeiser’s farm. Percy is the Saskatchewan farmer that has been battling Monsanto for a decade. I wasn’t able to find Percy at his shop, so I’ll have to plan a visit ahead of time in the future.

His story was an inspiration to me in the later 90’s, and opened the door to understanding the issues surrounding genetically modified crops. Indeed, I would credit this as being the starting point for my renewed interest in ecological concerns.

Many highways in Saskatchewan are ‘timed-out’. Some are in bad need of long-term resurfacing. Here’s proof:

The Arm River rest area on the way south towards Moose Jaw.

Heart of the Sunrise, near Ernfeld, west of Caronport.

On the Friday night, I camped in Calgary, just off of Stoney Trail and Hwy 1.

On Sunday, I took the longer scenic route home via the Crowsnest Hwy.

And finally, on Monday, I really took the long way home after camping the night near Cranbrook.

Here’s a nice pullout near Kaslo:

I came across some world travellers in Nakusp:

smart car owners will enjoy this one:

And in the evening after nearly blowing a hole in my leg when some rechargable batteries starting conducting through some loose change in the same pocket (doh), I passed 70,000 kms near Cheryville.
