I drove from Cold Lake Al to Kelowna and on to Howley NL back in 1997 in a 1997 Pontiac Firfly (Betty) 3 cyclinder 1 litre two door hatch with the Wife two kids dog and a cat and all our luggage. Whew never going to do that again. I didn't keep the records like you did but we figured it cost us somewhere around 250$. We did travel through the states for a good part though. Gas was somewher around 30-40 cents a liter in Alberta when we left.
I believe the mileage for the firefly (Betty) was somewhere in the range of 66 MPG.
Alas she is no more in my posession since at 190,000 km she was starting to show signs of wear specifically the clutch was at the end of its stroke and she was leaking oil so we traded her for a Chevy Aveo.
All in all a good run with absolutely no break downs and only the usual repairs muffler and one set of brakes. Finally remembered to check back to see how you made out. Impressive run.

Any ideas are welcomed except in the editing of the little book.
Heroes make bad editors.
Hope you liked the cover I painted.
We miss you
