The 100 MPG Challenge

Hi everyone,

Aug 29 (or so) will see me depart on a cross-Canada journey, with a return date of no later than Oct 1.

I will be driving solo in my 2005 smart fortwo coupe, which as you may already know, is wrapped with One-Tonne Challenge graphics. The space on the car was donated to the City of Abbotsford for a one year period. The car has been involved in many local events, including the 5-day Agrifair, and the Abbotsford International Airshow.

During the 5 week trip, the City of Abbotsford will assist in coordinating a few events with other cities that are running a Community One-Tonne Challenge program.

In case you were wondering, this trip is not being sponsored by Mercedes-Benz Canada. However, Environment Canada will do an article about my car/journey for the OTC website: http://www.climatechange.gc.ca/onetonne

There are some very strong possibilities for media coverage, both local and national.

The first goal of the trip is to make it from Victoria to St. Johns and back on $500.00 of fuel and/or achieve a fuel economy average of 81 mpg (3.5 L/100km) or better during the entire 16,000 kms on the trip.

Having just achieved 93 mpg (3.05 L/100km) on a recent trip, ‘100 mpg’ isn’t unrealistic. That will be the other major goal: to achieve fuel economy of at least 100 mpg (2.8 L/100km) on several tanks.

I called this 100 MPG guy up on a Friday evening back in March 2004. It was the first day of the autoshow. I told him to buy a smart car. He did. Sight unseen, he deposited on it the next morning. Hey Bill, where’s my $100! LOL…

Good luck and have fun Keith! And drive safe buddy! Offer is still on the table if you want to use one of my cruise controls to make your trip more comfortable… only takes an hour to install.

Either way! You do all of us smart owners proud, and you serve as a great educational and awareness tool to all Canadians who should strive to do better environmentally. Enjoy all of what Canada has to offer as best you can on your hurried schedule.

Travel safely Keith. I hope that you will be blogging along the way so that we can follow your progress. We managed to keep our blogs going during our North America tour by using free internet at public libraries and texting from our mobile phone.
